The southern Andes of Ecuador offer some of the country's most dramatic landscapes: snow-capped volcanoes, deep valleys, historic towns, and one of the continent's most impressive railway icons: the Devil's Nose. This journey combines culture, history, nature, and one of the world's most challenging train routes due to the engineering required to navigate near-vertical mountain walls.

Day 1

Quito • Cotopaxi • La Ciénega • Guano • Riobamba


Departure from Quito along the Avenue of the Volcanoes, with views of Cotopaxi, Rumiñahui and the Ilinizas.

 

Lunch at Hacienda La Ciénega

One of Ecuador’s oldest colonial haciendas, with historic courtyards and beautiful gardens.

 

Guano

Traditional Andean town known for:

• Handwoven wool carpets

• Famous “cholas” sweet bread

• Artisans and woodcarvers

• Historic monastery and the Guano Mummy

 

Dinner and overnight at Hotel Abraspungo (breakfast included)

 

Day 2

Riobamba • Alausí • Tren Nariz del Diablo • Sicalpa • Balbanera • Riobamba

Transfer to Alausí, a heritage town surrounded by towering mountains.

 

Devil’s Nose Train

One of the most complex railway engineering works in Latin America:

• Zigzag descent on nearly vertical mountain walls

• Historical explanation of its construction

• Panoramic canyon views

 

Lunch in Alausí

 

Visit to Sicalpa and Balbanera:

• Built in 1534, the first Catholic church in Ecuador.

• Volcanic stone façade.

• One of the most important colonial heritage sites.

 

Return to Riobamba

Dinner and overnight at Abraspungo (breakfast included).

 

Day 3

Riobamba • Conceptas • Ciénega • Quito


Visit to the Convent of the Conceptas

A major religious heritage site featuring:

• Sacred art museum

• Historical cloisters

• Centuries-old female monastic tradition

 

Lunch

 

Return to Quito via La Ciénega.

End of tour.
